Timing and location DOES matter
If you've lost an item in a public area, act quickly—chances of recovery decrease rapidly over time. The more foot traffic in the area, the higher the risk that someone else might find it first. That's why it's important to begin the search as soon as possible. The more precisely you can pinpoint the location of the loss, the better your chances. Naturally, a smaller search area also means less time needed to investigate.
On private property—like yards, fields, or gardens—the timing is less critical. Precious metal jewelry doesn't wear out or rust, but over time it sinks deeper into the ground. That's why a metal detector is an excellent tool for recovering lost items. The oldest ring I've ever found on assignment had been missing for 58 years before it was reunited with its owner—so it's always worth trying!

Search Compensation and Principles of Collaboration
Searching for a lost item is always a shared effort – a helper and the person in need come together with a common goal. Our detectorists set out with heart and care, but also with thorough preparation: they consider the right equipment in advance, spend time planning, and often travel long distances to assist.
Detecting can be light or demanding. Land-based detecting are typically the simplest in terms of equipment – a metal detector, goodwill, and a keen eye. Underwater detecting, such as diving, often require expensive gear, specialized skills, and safety arrangements. The compensation depends on the nature of the search and the equipment needed. For this reason, each detectorist and client agree on the compensation individually – case by case.
Always agree in advance. Search compensation, any potential reward for finding the item, and travel costs should be discussed before the search begins. This ensures both parties know what to expect – and helps avoid unpleasant surprises. Even if the item isn't found, the detectorist effort is still valuable. They've invested their time, expertise, and equipment to help someone – and that deserves recognition.
Even when nothing is found can bring peace of mind. When the search has been carried out thoroughly and professionally, the client can be confident that everything possible has been done. This often brings a sense of relief and helps let go – a decision has been made, and the matter can rest.
