That's why it's important to begin the search as soon as possible. The more precisely you can pinpoint the location of the loss, the better your chances. Naturally, a smaller search area also means less time needed to investigate.
On private property—like yards, fields, or gardens—the timing is less critical. Precious metal jewelry doesn't wear out or rust, but over time it sinks deeper into the ground. That's why a metal detector is an excellent tool for recovering lost items.
